道可道，非常道；

【今译】可以用语言说出来的“道”，它就不是永恒的“道”；
【英译】The tao that can be told, is not the eternal Tao;

名可名，非常名。

【今译】可以用言词说出来，不是永恒的“名”’，
【英译】The name that can be named, is not the eternal Name.

無，名天地之始；有，名萬物之母。

【今译】“无”是天地的本始，“有”是万物的根。
【英译】The nameless originated Heaven and Earth; The named is the Mother of All Things.

故常無，欲以觀其妙；常有，欲以觀其徼（jiǎo）。

【今译】从“无”中去观察“道”的奥妙；经常从“有”中去认识“道”的端倪。
【英译】In perennial nonbeing you see mystery, and in perennial being you see appearance.

此兩者，同出而異名，同謂之玄。

【今译】“无”和“有”这两者，来源相同而具有不同的名称，都是很幽深的；
【英译】The source of these two is identical, Yet their names are different, Together they are called dark-enigma,

玄之又玄，衆妙之門。

【今译】极远极深，是一切变化的总门。
【英译】dark-enigma deep within dark-enigma, gateway of all mystery.
